Precipitated Silica for the Ink Industry: A High-Performance Additive Driving Modern Printing Technologies

Patent Certificate for Precipitated Silica in Ink1

The global ink industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by sustainability regulations, advanced printing technologies, and growing demand for high-quality visual and functional performance. From packaging and labeling to commercial and digital printing, ink formulations are expected to deliver superior print clarity, controlled gloss, excellent stability, and consistent processing behavior-while also meeting stricter environmental standards. In this context, functional fillers and additives have become far more than cost reducers. They are now essential formulation tools that directly influence ink rheology, surface properties, durability, and print quality. Among these materials, precipitated silica has emerged as one of the most versatile and widely adopted additives for modern ink systems. This article provides a comprehensive overview of precipitated silica for the ink industry, explaining its properties, functions, application benefits, and key selection criteria for ink manufacturers seeking reliable, high-performance solutions.

Our product JS-280C has applied the patent of production process for white carbon black specially used in inks.

Main Functions and Applications in Ink:

Thickening and Thixotropic Control (Core Function)

Preventing Sedimentation: In inks (especially those with high pigment content, such as screen printing inks), silica forms a three-dimensional network structure, greatly improving the thixotropy of the system. When at rest, the network structure locks the liquid and pigment particles, preventing sedimentation and agglomeration of pigments and fillers; when subjected to shear (such as stirring or printing), the structure is temporarily broken, the ink becomes thinner, and the fluidity improves. Once the shear stops, the structure quickly recovers, preventing sagging and bleeding.

Controlling Leveling: Helps the ink to set quickly after printing, maintaining good dot definition and avoiding excessive leveling that causes blurred prints.

Matting Effect

By controlling the particle size and porosity of the silica, a fine roughness can be created on the ink surface, scattering light and achieving a matting or semi-matting effect, commonly used in matte inks.

Reinforcement and Wear Resistance

As nano/micron-sized particles, it can be evenly dispersed in the ink film, providing a certain reinforcing effect and improving the wear resistance, scratch resistance, and mechanical strength of the ink film.

Improved Anti-Blocking Properties

In film printing (such as plastic surface printing inks), adding silica can form micro-protrusions on the surface of the ink film, reducing the direct contact area between the films, thereby improving the anti-blocking performance when printed products are stacked.

Dispersion Aid

In the pigment preparation process, it can be used as a carrier or dispersion aid to help pigments disperse and stabilize better in the

Advantages of Precipitated Silica in Ink Applications

Compared with alternative fillers and additives, precipitated silica offers a unique combination of performance, cost efficiency, and formulation flexibility.

High Oil Absorption Capacity

The porous structure of precipitated silica provides high oil absorption, enabling effective viscosity control and pigment stabilization with relatively low dosage levels.

Excellent Dispersibility

Well-designed ink-grade precipitated silica disperses easily in both aqueous and solvent systems, minimizing agglomeration and ensuring consistent performance.

Chemical Inertness and Compatibility

Precipitated silica is chemically stable and compatible with a wide range of resins, pigments, solvents, and additives, making it suitable for diverse ink chemistries.

Cost-Performance Balance

Compared to fumed silica, precipitated silica delivers similar functional benefits at a significantly lower cost, making it ideal for large-scale industrial ink production.

Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

Most precipitated silica products comply with REACH, RoHS, and other global regulatory standards, supporting the transition toward environmentally responsible ink formulations.
