Silica for toothpaste is an amorphous powder, tasteless, insoluble in water or acid, chemically inert, and has good solubility with fluoride and other raw materials in toothpaste. The structure and particle size of silica can be controlled by production conditions. According to different types of toothpaste, three products are produced respectively: friction type, mixed type and thickening type.


SiO2: nH2O, molecular weight 60.08 (anhydrous), usually containing 10-15% crystal water, with an average particle size of 4-8 μ m, is chemically inert, and has good compatibility with fluoride and other components in dental development. It is an abrasive with rapid development in recent years.

Silica as Abrasive

The structure and particle size of silica can be controlled by reaction conditions, which also controls the friction force of silica. It is convenient to produce toothpastes with good cleaning power and without dentin damage.

Another characteristic of silicon dioxide is that transparent toothpaste can be produced. The refractive index of silicon dioxide is 1.43-1.45.
