The role of silica in paint is very extensive, mainly reflected in the following aspects:
Improving weather resistance and wear resistance: Adding silica as a filler to paint can significantly enhance the weather resistance and wear resistance of the coating. For example, gas-phase silica, due to its unique hydrophobicity and three-dimensional network structure, can enhance the anti-corrosion performance and adhesion of paints. In addition, nano silica can also improve the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of coatings through surface modification technology.
Improving rheological properties: Silicon dioxide, as a rheological additive in paint, can effectively prevent sagging and thick edges, and improve construction efficiency. Untreated silica forms a three-dimensional network structure through hydrogen bonding, increasing the viscosity of the coating. However, this structure is destroyed when subjected to mechanical shear forces, thereby restoring fluidity.
Anti settling and extinction: Silicon dioxide has good anti settling properties, which can prevent pigment particles from settling and layering, thereby improving the stability of coatings. Meanwhile, silica can also serve as a matting agent to adjust the transparency and glossiness of coatings.
Enhanced anti-corrosion performance: Gas phase silica is widely used in anti-corrosion coatings, and its hydrophobicity and chemical stability make it an ideal anti-corrosion additive. In addition, nano silica further enhances the anti-corrosion performance of the coating by crosslinking with other components in the coating.
Improving mechanical performance: Silicon dioxide can significantly enhance the hardness and scratch resistance of paint. For example, colloidal silica particles modified with silane have been shown to improve the hardness and wear resistance of water-based varnishes.
Environmental advantages: Using nano silica instead of traditional resins can reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it more environmentally friendly.
The application of silica in paint not only enhances the physical and chemical properties of coatings, but also has environmental advantages, making it an indispensable and important additive in the modern coating industry.
