Silicon dioxide is used to make flat glass, glass products, cast sand, glass fiber, ceramic glaze, sand blasting for antirust, filter sand, flux, refractory and lightweight concrete. Silicon dioxide is widely used in many industrial products. Rare crystals in nature can be used to create important parts of the electronics industry, optical instruments and crafts. Silica is an important raw material for the manufacture of optical fibers. Generally pure quartz can be used to make quartz glass. The coefficient of expansion of quartz glass is very small. It is equivalent to the 1/18 of ordinary glass. It can withstand the change of temperature, and the acid resistance is good (except HF). Therefore, the quartz glass is often used to make high temperature resistant chemical instruments. Quartz sand is often used as a glass material and a building material.
