Silica Matting Agents in Paint
Matting agents in coatings are additives that can change the optical properties of the coating film surface, forming a fine rough surface. When light is projected onto the surface, diffuse reflection occurs, achieving a matte or even matte effect. Two conditions are required for the coating to form a fine rough surface: (1) there are a large number of matting agent particles with appropriate particle sizes in the coating film; (2) appropriate volume shrinkage occurs during the drying process of the coating film. At the same time, the use of matting agents in coatings also needs to meet the following requirements: (1) the refractive index should be as close to that of the film-forming resin as possible (1.4 to 1.6); (2) good wear resistance and scratch resistance; (3) good dispersion and redispersibility in the coating.

Common matting agents are divided into organic and inorganic types. Organic matting agents are mostly thermosetting polymer materials, while inorganic matting agents are mainly silicas. In addition, there are also wax matting agents and wax-modified silica matting agents. The refractive index of amorphous silica is 1.46, which is close to that of most resins commonly used in the coatings industry. Therefore, it has good optical properties when used in coating films and has become the preferred material for high-end paint matting agents. There are three main synthesis methods for silica matting agents: (1) gas-phase method; (2) precipitation method; (3) sol-gel method.
Matting agents have played an important role in the coatings industry. With the development of technology and the increasingly high requirements for coating properties, the demand for high-quality matting agents has increased. In the future, with the continuous improvement of the performance of matting agents and the expansion of application fields, I believe that matting agents will have a broader market prospect.
