Is Silicon Dioxide Harmful to Human Health?
Silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is commonly used as an anti-caking agent. When consumed as part of a balanced diet, it can help to restore joint and cartilage damage such as arthritis. Additionally, it can also benefit the health of blood vessel walls. However, just like excessive intake of any vitamin, excessive intake of silicon dioxide can lead to side effects.
The use of silicon dioxide as an anti-caking agent is relatively small and therefore does not cause any harmful side effects. The FAO/WHO(2001) recommends a dosage of 10mg/kg for milk powder, cocoa powder, edible na fat, cocoa fat, and 15g/kg for sugar and glucose powder, soup powder, and soup cubes. The maximum limit for this product as an anti-caking agent is 2% according to the US FDA.
According to the "National Food Safety Standards for the Use of Food Additives" (GB 2760-2011), the maximum usage amount for egg powder, milk powder, cocoa products, dehydrated egg protein products, sugar powder, vegetable fat powder, solid drinks, and maternal formula foods is 15g/kg. The maximum usage amount for spices and solid compound seasonings is 20g/kg, while that for soybean product processing is 0.025g/kg.
Therefore, it can be concluded that silicon dioxide, when consumed within safe limits, does not pose any harm to human health. In fact, its use as an anti-caking agent can provide numerous health benefits. As with any supplement or food, moderation is key, and it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional before making any dietary changes.
