Appliction of Silicon Dioxide in Cosmetic
Silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica, has a variety of applications in cosmetics. In this article, we will explore three common uses of silicon dioxide in cosmetics.
1. Silicon dioxide and nail polish
In nail polish, silicon dioxide can ensure even pigment distribution in brighteners, prevent pigment deposition, and provide the final product with rheological properties, thereby improving coating performance. If the refractive index of the solvent system is the same as that of silicon dioxide (1.48), a transparent nail polish formula, such as base and top coat, can be formed. Otherwise, when used at high concentrations, it will become opaque but it will reduce the required gloss. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic silicon dioxide products can be used in nail polish, with a recommended concentration between 0.25-4.0%.
2. Silicon dioxide and lipstick
In lipstick, silicon dioxide can evenly distribute pigments, greatly improve temperature resistance, and prevent the lipstick from softening when the temperature rises. After applying to the lips, it can prevent the lipstick from transferring to the lip line, making the lipstick long-lasting. When used at high concentrations, gloss will decrease. Depending on the desired product characteristics, 200 or R972 can be selected, with a concentration of 0.25-4%.
3. Silicon dioxide and eye care
Silicon dioxide is an efficient anti-caking and free-flow agent for many eye and facial cosmetics, including powders, foundations, blushes, mascaras, and eyeliners, which can improve the storage stability and dispersion of powder products. It also allows cosmetics to use pigments, especially as efficient processing additives for grinding and filtering powders, particularly at high solid contents.
In conclusion, silicon dioxide is a versatile ingredient in cosmetics. Its use can offer a range of benefits, including improved product performance, even application, and long-lasting effects. As with any cosmetic ingredient, the appropriate concentration and blend of silicon dioxide should be selected based on the desired outcome of the final product.
