High-efficiency matting
Adding 4–6% precipitated silica to acrylic or polyester coil systems can stably reduce the 60° gloss to 10–20 GU, and there are no roller marks at a roller speed of 100 m/min. Its micron-level pores can scatter visible light to achieve uniform matte, meeting the high-end appearance requirements of home appliance panels and advertising boards.


Double mechanical properties
Silica nano-skeleton embedded in the paint film can significantly improve the paint film hardness (pencil hardness from HB→2H), wear resistance (Taber 500 g/100 r weight loss <20 mg) and 0T bending without cracking. After 3000 hours of outdoor exposure, ΔE<1.5, no powdering.
Weather resistance and chemical stability
The surface silanol can form hydrogen bonds with the resin carboxyl group, reducing water vapor permeability and improving salt spray resistance for 1000 hours; at the same time, the high UV reflectivity delays the light aging of the resin, which is especially suitable for coastal high UV environments.
Transparency and brightness coexist
The low refractive index prevents silica from covering the pigment in transparent paint, improving color saturation; when used with carbon black and titanium dioxide, it can reduce floating color and floweriness.

Typical application cases
• Home appliance PCM board: polyester/amino system, 6% precipitated silica, matte dark gray, MEK wiping resistance ≥100 times.
• Aluminum curtain wall roll coating: PVDF/acrylic system, 5% silica + 1% fluorosilicone additive, gloss 15 GU, acid rain resistance for 30 cycles without loss of gloss.
• Advertising coils: high solid acrylic acid, 4% silica replaces 30% organic matting powder, VOC is reduced by 12%, and cost is reduced by 8%.


 

 

Q&A:
1. Why do coil coatings need silica?


Coiled steel and aluminum-magnesium-manganese plates need to form a film of 25–30 µm in one go on the roller coating line, which requires both fast curing and outdoor weather resistance for more than 20 years. Traditional matting agents such as wax powder and organic matting resin have problems such as hot stickiness, migration, and gloss rebound, while precipitated silica has become an "all-round player" .

 

2.How to use precipitated silica?
Pre-dispersion: It is recommended to use a high-speed disperser at 2000 rpm, and the fineness can be ≤15 µm in 10 minutes; or make a 20% slurry for secondary addition.
Addition amount: 3-4% for primer, 5-6% for topcoat, excessive amount will thicken and reduce adhesion.
Compatibility: Synergistic with polyamide wax and fluorocarbon leveling agent, it can solve the brush mark problem caused by silica thixotropy.
Environmental protection: Food-grade precipitated silica complies with FDA 21 CFR §175.300 and meets RoHS and REACH export requirements.
