Hydrated silica, also referred to as white carbon black', is a type of opaque, suspension polymers that is used as a thickening agent in painting and coating. It is a mineral-based, one-dimensional polymer carved from quartz rocks that is composed of interconnected tetrahedral inert structure, making it ideal as a thickening agent due to its ability to absorb large quantities of water and/or solvents. The hydrated silica is also capable of stabilizing the paint or coating during increase in viscosity, thereby enabling easy application and even distribution of the material over the desired surface. It is also capable of creating robust surfaces that are strongly resistant to abrasion, frost, and chemical aggression. As compared to other thickening agents, the hydrated silica is exceptionally lightweight and economical.
